Imo basing a character on yourself is a good thing, since it allows you to draw from real experiences as you play them. The risk you run though, is that you end up making an idealised version of yourself. So not you as you are, but you as you would like
to be, and then you're moving into Sue territory. Another risk is that you don't want anything 'bad' to happen to the character because the character is 'you'. But if you avoid those pitfalls, there is absolutely nothing wrong with modelling a character after yourself.
