Now we can duel more than 20 times an hour, so it's possible to get more points. Plus, some people are brewing potions, but that's quite slow. So I think that the big numbers should be possible, if you are really determined. I guess, I'm bad at math....
Here are the numbers, if you're interested. If a person spent 8 hours dueling, with a maximum possible duel rate of 180 duels/hr, and won 75% of those duels, he/she would be able to earn about 5,400 points a day. It's been about 8 days since the Point Counters were reset, so it's theoretically possible to have about 47,000 points by now. But nobody can do that (spend 8 hours of your day, every day, doing nothing but dueling? Really?), so most likely a bot is at work here.
If I remember correctly, I think the duel limit was removed a while before Pottermore opened to the public. Not sure exactly when, but I recall the points skyrocketing when people started joining by the thousands.
1) You'd be surprised. Some people spend 8 hours a day playing MMOs and stuff, why should PM be any different?
2) Potions, although inferior to Dueling, do add a nice supplement of points on the side for many top players.
3) 75%? Even I'm often around there. I'd guess that the absolute top-of-the-world duelists could do a little better than that...
Also, I don't know about the other houses, but I often see encouraging messages from some of our leaderboarders in the common room.
I'm not saying that you don't have a point, but perhaps you are underestimating just how compelling some people can find things like leaderboarding. Or maybe I'm just naive?
