Wasn't aware of the duel limit during Beta, sorry. I agree though that sounds like a good idea Silverstrike, not sure how it would work though as some people have only got time at weekends or on days off etc.

Anyway we are slowly catching up to Slytherin who are less than 600.000 points ahead now.

Thanks to those who responded to help clear away my fog! I didn't realize the 20-duels-an-hour limit was lifted; but as others have commented, it still is a big stretch to constantly win duels that often over that long a stretch of time. And I don't call that "winning"; I call it "obsession."

I've posted elsewhere, and still believe, that PM should impose limits on duelling and even on total points earned, by whatever method. It isn't really a game when 20 or so people spend their lives racking up points while several thousands are no longer interested because there is really no reason for them to make the effort against such huge numbers. I think it's defeating the purpose of getting people to share and work together.

Ravenclaws already have an uphill battle because we have significantly fewer numbers of members than all three other houses; and yet we were head to head with Slytherin for a very long time during Beta; we only dropped back after PM was opened to all.

So is gaining House Points supposed to reflect group achievements, or numbers membership, or individual efforts, or programming ability? I wonder if even the creators of the duelling game can answer that one!

I do wish there were more things to do that earned House Points.

Jemby, I get the impression that Pottermore were a little surprise by how popular dueling is, and just weren't prepared for people spenfing all day on the site dueling.

Apparently during Beta there was a potions leaderboard as well, that would be good as that is limited by time you can only make so many a day.

Also would be nice if we could see our current rankings within the house, then at least those of us with no chance of getting anywhere near the leaderboard, could work to improve that.

Back on topic, sorry. Slytherin only half a million ahead now. and where have all the Hufflepuffs gone? Back to the common room to party?

I don't think that's really duelling what's so popular, it's just the fastest way to get points. personally, I find it really dull, and I'm stumped how some people can spend so much time with it, especially since everyone is always using the same spell.

I think they need to have it limited so that you must use the spell your opponent used or something... But, whatever ^-^'

Anyways, great job, Slytherin! Let's try to get the next cup!

Draconis wrote:Jemby, the dueling limit isn't there anymore. But honestly I have no idea when it was removed. Now we can duel more than 20 times an hour, so it's possible to get more points. Plus, some people are brewing potions, but that's quite slow. So I think that the big numbers should be possible, if you are really determined. I guess, I'm bad at math....

Here are the numbers, if you're interested. If a person spent 8 hours dueling, with a maximum possible duel rate of 180 duels/hr, and won 75% of those duels, he/she would be able to earn about 5,400 points a day. It's been about 8 days since the Point Counters were reset, so it's theoretically possible to have about 47,000 points by now. But nobody can do that (spend 8 hours of your day, every day, doing nothing but dueling? Really?), so most likely a bot is at work here.

If I remember correctly, I think the duel limit was removed a while before Pottermore opened to the public. Not sure exactly when, but I recall the points skyrocketing when people started joining by the thousands.

1) You'd be surprised. Some people spend 8 hours a day playing MMOs and stuff, why should PM be any different?
2) Potions, although inferior to Dueling, do add a nice supplement of points on the side for many top players.
3) 75%? Even I'm often around there. I'd guess that the absolute top-of-the-world duelists could do a little better than that...
Also, I don't know about the other houses, but I often see encouraging messages from some of our leaderboarders in the common room.

I'm not saying that you don't have a point, but perhaps you are underestimating just how compelling some people can find things like leaderboarding. Or maybe I'm just naive?

1) That's true. Though I've never met anyone like that, I'm guessing that it's easier to spend an extended period of time playing MMOs, where there's a variety of things to do, as opposed to PM, where the Dueling game is extremely repetitive, and most good duelists only use PT anyway.
2) The point totals I was looking at came from the Dueling leaderboard, to make sure I left out the Potions variable.
3) I average 143 doing PT, and I tie just as often as I lose, so my win rate is about 80%. (Maybe 75% is a bit low, but I was just throwing a believable number out there. If the top duelists' win rate were 80% or higher, it's a difference of a couple thousand points, which do add up, I suppose.)

Regarding leaderboards, you have a good point. But would people like that spend those 8 hours when they could more easily use a bot? Not saying they all do, but 6 digit point totals at this stage of the game look awfully suspicious. (The Hufflepuff leader has twice as many points as the no. 2 person!)

Has anyone noticed we are back up in third place? Just thought I'd point it out.
