Re: Harry Potter Monopoly board

This is a great idea, Tim. I love playing Monopoly and I think having a Wizarding World Monopoly will be an amazing idea. I like the concept of having the Ministry of Magic decrees stand in for the community chest cards, and Gringotts for the chance cards. Since the jail is Azkaban, who or what will be representing the police officer in the upper right corner of the board? A Dementor, or an Auror?

I agree with Pumpkin on changing the railway stations to Wizarding schools: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and Salem Witches' Institute (a probable Wizarding school in America) or you could pick another forth school from the few other possible Wizarding schools out there. (Like, Brazilian wizarding school, Koldovstoretz School, etc.) But, if you would like to keep these as stations then may I suggest using; King’s Cross, Hogsmeade, Surbiton, and Paddington for the four stations.

Now I have a question. Do wizards have need of utilities? Since they use other sources for lighting and water. If so, would you like to use Ministry of Magic offices or departments to stand in for power and water? If so they’re quite a few to choose from.

However, one might transform the utilities into train stations, if you are going with the concept of transforming the four railway stations to four Wizarding schools that is. Then you would have Hogsmeade Station and Platform 9 ¾ at Kings Cross Station. Since these two are the main Wizarding railway stations we know by heart.

I somewhat agree with Pumpkin that Malfoy Manor should be one of the two blue property squares, but I don’t know about Hogwarts being the second one. How about the Riddle Manor House, instead? Tom Riddle Sr. did come from a wealthy family, albeit a Muggle one. (Just an idea.)

Possible Property Groupings
    Brown (2 Slots.) “Shacks”
  • Shrieking Shack?
  • Guant Shack?

    Light Blue (3 Slots) “Inns”
  • Three Broomsticks Inn?
  • The Leaky Cauldron?
  • Hog's Head Inn?

    Pink/Purple (3 Slots) “Cokeworth”
  • Cokeworth? (I would put the address to the old Evan’s place, you know the childhood home of Lily and Petunia Evans, but alas I don’t think they gave the street name or called it anything particular. Unless you just want to call it the Evans’ House, or something…)
  • Railview Hotel?
  • Spinner's End?

    Orange (3 Slots) “Hogsmeade Village”
  • Dervish and Banges?
  • Honeydukes?
  • Zonko's Joke Shop?

Red (3 Slots) “Memorable Sites Pertaining to Harry Potter’s Childhood”
  • 4 Privet Drive?
  • Hut on the Rock?
  • Hagrid's Hut?

    Yellow (3 Slots) “Wizarding Homes”
  • The Lovegood House?
  • Potter Cottage?
  • 12 Grimmauld Place?

    Green (3 Slots) “The Weasleys”
  • The Burrow?
  • Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes?
  • Shell Cottage?

Blue (2 Slots) “Stately Manor Homes”
  • Riddle (manor) House
  • Malfoy Manor

Thank you Sunset for scouting out all those possible properties you listed here. I hope you don’t mind that I borrowed from your post and switched Hogwarts with Cokeworth and Ollivander's Wand Shop with Hagrid's Hut.

I like your ideas of the different possible cards Poppy. (And, also about the fourth school.) Maybe there could be a card about being picked for the Triwizard Tournament or winning the Triwizard Tournament with a bonus of 1,000 Galleons (probably one or two card in a deck special award card). Or, maybe a “You don't pay here” card that whenever one lands on the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes square they do not have to pay rent… or not.

Quick question: Are you planning on changing over the regular Monopoly currency to Wizarding Monopoly currency? Like, Knuts, Sickles, and Galleons?

Edit: I forgot to mention that I would love to play this on here when it's complete and ready for playing.

Tee and I think a lot alike. ^^ Has a lot of the same ideas as me, lol.

The "jail" square would obviously be Azkaban, no? And "go to jail" could be an encounter with Dementors? Or Aurors? Whichever would make more sense with the end result of the new board.

Wizards don't have need for utilities, I agree. What if those two become The Quibbler and the Daily Prophet? Luxury Tax square could be... a Gringott's tax? for maintaining your vault? Is that a thing, can we make that a thing? lol

I would love to work on the ideas for chance and community chest cards!

Loving the ideas so far.

Was wondering about the railway stations, as only two stations are mentioned and only three schools what about making the four stations the common rooms for the four houses?

Tim, the way our game worked was totally different, each square represented an event in the first book rather than a location, there was a challenge or an event on each square and teams could move on once a day as long as they had completed whatever was necessary the day before, so the board was more a way of keeping track of each teams location than anything else.

Making the game printable sounds good. Maybe we could test it out on here for you once it's done to see how it all fits together.

Love the house as the stations idea and that way one of the cards could be that if you are from the house you may have to pay less than what you owe.

I like the idea of the Inns, but I feel like Lily's childhood suburb doesn't really come up often in the books and so why would they even be on the board at all?

Little_Tee wrote:Orange (3 Slots) “Hogsmeade Village”

  • Why is it Dervish and Banges? Wouldn't the tea shop, the post office or the station make more sense?

Little_Tee wrote:Red (3 Slots) “Memorable Sites Pertaining to Harry Potter’s Childhood”

  • I love your ideas though Tee, just so you know. But Harry hated Privet Drive as well as the Hut on the Rock. Wouldn't they be worth less? I don't understand why you would put them so close to the end of the board. Wondering if by Potter Cottage you mean Godric's Hollow? Other than that I like the idea of doing Grimmauld Place, the house of the Lovegoods and Godric's Hollow.

  • Weasleys will stay that way. I think that's an awesome idea. Riddle Manor and Malfoy Manor... Ultimate evil much? Why wouldn't we choose to do Hogwarts as Mayfair?

River got a good idea, using houses as railway stations :)
I would also like to help with the comm chest and chance cards! I've got some ideas already :)
Pumpkin I love your ideas as well :D

As in Harry wasn't accepted into Privet Drive and the Dursley Home and then Tom Riddle wasn't accepted by anyone in Wool's Orphanage.

Wow, great ideas here. Thanks everyone for throwing ideas into the mix.

Dani & Tee I'm trying Rufus Scrimgeour or a dementor on the go to jail square. Although I noticed all the theme boards still use the default go to jail guy. Maybe I'll draw him and "wizardify" him in a wizards robe instead of police uniform.

(Nice card ideas Poppy :) there is so much scope to have fun with them)
Dani I love the Quibbler and Daily Prophet idea for Utilities.

Sort of organising the properties based on a mix of value and importance in the wizarding world.

I'm not sure having Privet drive as a brown property fits. I mean It will become a place of legend, the childhood house of Harry Potter lol. Interesting angle though Pumpkin.

    Brown:
    Shrieking Shack?
    Hut on the Rock?

I had an idea, how about using the Elves for chance cards? As in they randomly appear to either help or hinder.
Gringotts would still work for chance cards, but it would probably suit better being the Luxury Tax spaces instead.

    AND (optional)

If you roll a double, you get to use a special ability.

Double 1's: Use the Floo Powder network, move to any space.
Double 6's: Wizards duel! Attack to control another player's property. Each roll a dice, the highest number wins the duel and the property! (You cannot challenge for a property if a player owns all the properties in that colour group)

    Get the idea?

GO TO JAIL ideas (need to centre the jail text, but I'm actually looking at this corner upside-down the way I created the board so didn't notice at first)
