These look really good! Great job! I once saw a tutorial about making wands using noting but paper and hot glue, I'll see if I can find it again.

I really need to get started on my wand, so many ideas yet so little time

Looks great McKinstry!

Did you carve in the band that marks off the handle from the body, or is it a bit of leather, or something else? (Speaking about the most recent picture, with the red sealer)

Hi Oaknight, thanks! Yea it's all one piece of wood. I just carved 2 small grooves into it. Used a hack saw to make the initial cut then went round with a square file to make a slight diamond shape and sanded it off.

Hermione that must have taken some time, I was testing out a similar heavy duty knife on a spare branch. I might try and cut out a spiral for the Douglas Fir wand. You did a great job with yours!

*Icy are you going to make it out of a real tree branch or from a wooden dowel? Use a real branch ;) Actually the paper and hot glue method truns out some pretty great wands, just less sturdy.

Thank you. :) It took a few days but I only worked on it in my spare time. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

All my evenings seem to be busy this new year, a little progress though. Will hopefully get one finished this weekend when I get a bit of time. Goning to have to experiment with different methods of doing the handle.

Some acrylic brown for the Larch and Birch wands. And you can see my trusty glue gun for glueing a handle for the Douglas Fir wand, at least that's the plan.

Spoiler: show

I'm so picky about getting the right finish with the handle and all, but the sooner I finish one the sooner I can begin figuring out how to create an Olivander's style box :)

I'm happier with how these are looking. The Douglas Fir (smaller wand) and the longer Japanese Larch wand.

I've treated them with wood sealer but I'll take a better photo when they dry again, my phone pics didn't turn out so well, had to brighten them in PS.

What's next? The Olivander Boxes! :D
I'm going to need to design a brand name for my wands, any ideas? Then I can print this onto the boxes too.

The wands look great, Tim! For the brand name, you can try to make up a word. (ex. magillacraft) Here's a link to guide you: http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Made-Up-Word Try to invent a word that's easy to pronounce, and can be searched online without other links overshadowing your brand.(If you're planning to sell the wands)

Bacillumency (Bacillum meaning staff/wand in latin and you know mency (Occlumency etc.) it may not catch on. You could just do something with McKinstry in it. :P

In Latin wand can be - virgula, bacillum, lituus, caduceus, so you can always make it sound like a spell or something. Lignum Opus maybe (wood work). I'd say think Latin and it will sound magical.

Thanks for the link Ravensky, checking it now :)

Latin names for wand sounds pretty good, maybe a little to abstract? It could work, or Celtic names too. I'll have to research some celtic meanings as well as latin.

I think I came across another tutorial that named their brand "Swish & Flick" which I thought was pretty playful, great name.
