Team Applications

Postby Rhynn » August 9th, 2015, 5:38 am

Let's have a look at which teams there are:
  • Capsule Collection Team
  • Class Team
  • Examinators
  • Quibbler Reporters
  • Event Team
  • VIP Team
  • PR/Social Media Team
  • RP Team

They're all explained in the posts for each team, below.

While you are allowed to be a part of multiple teams, please keep in mind we ask for dedication. If you think you'll be able to do something for the team maybe once a week or less, it's probably best not to apply.
Also, if you don't have the necessary skills for a team yet, that's okay! As long as you're willing (and have the time to) learn. Keep in mind though that we can't have everyone in a team be learning about it at once, because we do need the work to be done in the meantime.

The work is all voluntary, as we simply don't have any budget to work with. However, some employers still count this sort of volunteer work as valuable work experience, so there's a good chance you'd be able to put this on your resumé! At the very least it could get a spot on your LinkedIn profile, if you have one ;)

Each team has an explanation post, but not every team has openings at the moment. Make sure to read well before applying, so you don't apply for a team without openings!

Some teams are moderator-only, simply because of the amount of responsibility that comes with them. While you're free to apply for those, keep in mind we're more strict for those, as being accepted into the team also means you become a Professor or Prefect, with all the responsibilities those positions bring. At the moment the moderator-only teams are the only ones for which we accept Professor/Prefect applications.

To apply to any of the teams, please fill out the form below and send it to me (Rhynn) and Jag17. We'll discuss it with the current members of the teams and once we've reached a decision, we'll get back to you as soon as possible. If you're applying for the position of Professor or Prefect as well, please also fill out the second form.

To apply for a team member position you must had been a member for 3 months. You will have to complete a month trial before officially being added to the team. For Professor or prefect you must had been on the forum for 6 months

Team: (which team are you applying for)
Position: Professor/Prefect/Team member (which position within the team are you applying for)
Do you, on average, have an hour each day to spend doing work for PFF? Yes/No
Do you have, or are you willing and able to get Skype? Yes/No (Skype isn't necessary, but it's a really easy and quick way of communicating)
In which time zone are you (most often)?
What are some things you think you will be doing?
Why do you think you would be a good fit for the team?

Professor/Prefect application (please also fill out the team application form!)
Are you 18 years of age or older? (Professors are 18+, anyone below that will be Prefect)
Do you have experience as a forum moderator? If so, please include links and if possible, someone to contact about this
Why do you think you'd be a good moderator?

If you're applying for Professor or Prefect, please make sure to read the information in the spoiler!
Spoiler: show
Being a PFF Staff member is a lot of fun, but we also expect our staff members to get some solid work done. You have responsibilities; it's much like a real job, but it (usually) takes up less time. You'll be responsible for providing normal members with a safe environment and for some daily tasks. You may end up dealing with annoying people, rule breaking, and in some cases (especially as Professor; we try to keep this away from Prefects), adult matters. You'll have to be firm when needed; overall, however, you just have to be a fun and somewhat creative person!

Positions:
Prefects - junior moderators. Main responsibility outside of the team they're a part of is keeping their common room active and fun.
Professors - Responsible for the team they're a part of. Help the prefects in the common room duties. Responsible for welcoming, helping and sorting new members, and need to step in when there's a problem.

Requirements:
  • To apply for Professor, you need to be at least 18 years of age
  • You need to have time to work on PFF. If (on average) you have at least an hour daily, you should be able to do the job - there are times when you will have to put more time in it, though.
  • Skype isn't necessary, but keep in mind you may miss things if you don't have it. Any skype communication is kept to instant messaging, so no voice or video chatting is needed.
  • You need to know the forum rules. You don't need to know them by heart, but if something comes up you should know if it's breaking a rule or not.
  • You should not have gotten any official warnings in your time on PFF. Unofficial warnings are not a problem - as long as you fixed whatever the warning was about.
  • You have to be able to take criticism and feedback. We always try to stay nice when helping our fellow staff members improve, but things can always be misunderstood.
  • You should not be afraid to approach other people about things they are doing wrong. If a member is breaking forum rules, you need to be able to approach them about this. People may get angry at you - you have to be able to take this.
  • You have to be an active member, or be willing and able to become more active than you are now.

Experience as a forum moderator is nice, but not required.

Capsule Collection Team
The Capsule Collection team is in charge of the Capsule Collection. While it's already a cool feature, it can always be improved. You'll be the one to do so!
You'll also be responsible for things like updating and running it, and creating new sets.
There's quite a lot of material to work with already, so even if you don't have any ideas for improving yet, there's stuff to do.

Team size: 4
Openings: 0

Duties
  • Keeping up with the daily runnings of the machine; things like giving people their turn on request, trading in figures to the machine, etc.
  • Thinking about and putting in place ways to improve the capsule collection
  • Creating and releasing new sets

Qualifications/Skills
  • You need to have a good grasp on the workings of the capsule machine
  • You need to be creative
  • You need to be able to or willing (and able) to learn how to make pixel art. I'm willing to help anyone who needs help learning, and I'll always be available for making new sets, but eventually it'd be good if the team can do this themselves, too.

One extra note on the capsule collection. If there is anyone who thinks they can code an automated capsule collection to integrate with the forum, please contact me!

Class Professors
There's a lot of work to be done on the PFF classes, and this team will have a LOT of initial work, since the classes for the missing years need to be written. The team also needs to think about how to properly structure and run the classes. After that's all done, it comes down to keeping up with the classes and grading. It'd be ideal if any homework sent in by students can be graded within three days, but I'm okay with within a week as well.

This team is moderator-only, so if you're applying for this, you'd also have to apply for the position of Professor or Prefect.

Team size: 2
Openings: 2

Duties
  • Initially, classes for all of the missing years and subjects need to be written
  • Adding students to classes and giving them their student ID
  • Grading homework as quickly as possible after it's been submitted by students
  • Rethinking the setup of the classes

Qualifications/Skills
  • A good knowledge of the Harry Potter world and school subjects is required
  • Writing skill would be helpful for the initial class-writing
  • Knowledge of how to use Google Spreadsheets
  • Fair judgement, in order to grade classes
  • It would be good if there is one member with the ability to make small edits to images

Examinators
The team of Examinators will be bringing back and keeping up with the IMP, YETI and OWL tests. The first duty of this team is to figure out how to make them work, since they're not currently available and need to be brought back in a good way.
Once that's done, the main task is grading them. Don't underestimate this! The tests were a very popular feature and grading them takes time, not to mention a good knowledge of the whole Harry Potter universe - including the somewhat more obscure facts and info.

Team size: 3
Openings: 2

Duties
  • Bringing back the IMP/YETI/OWL tests
  • Grading submitted tests and sending people their results
  • Possibly improving the tests

Qualifications/Skills
  • A thorough knowledge of the Harry Potter universe is essential, even more obscure facts. There is an answer sheet, but people are very creative in their answers sometimes.
  • Fair judgement for grading the tests
  • Knowledge of how to use Google Spreadsheets
  • It would be good if there is one member with the ability to make small edits to images

Quibbler Reporters
Quibbler reporters are constantly on the lookout for things to write about in the Quibbler, and are responsible for getting an issue out every quarter of the year.
There are different 'jobs' within the Quibbler team, so there are different descriptions too. Specify which one you're applying for! You can have multiple duties within the team, so if you want more than one apply for each separately.

Team size: 10
Openings: 0

Editor
Editors are responsible for reading the articles the writers give them, and editing them to make them fit for the Quibbler. Taking out spelling errors, making sentences flow nicer, etc.

Team size: 2
Openings: 0

Duties
  • Editing the articles the writers submit

Qualifications/Skills
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language (regional variants like British English, American English etc. are all accepted), in all aspects (style, vocabulary, grammar, etc.)

Writer
Writers provide the main content of the Quibbler. In their daily forum lives they are always on the lookout for things to spin into an article.

Team size: 5
Openings: 1

Duties
  • Providing written content for the Quibbler

Qualifications/Skills
  • Good writing skills are a requirement
  • Creativity is definitely needed, because the Quibbler needs to be made even if there's not much news to talk about
  • Shouldn't be afraid to approach people for an article
  • Good knowledge of the English language (proper grammar, style etc.) is very helpful

When applying for this position, please include a sample article in your application!

Artist
While text is very important for the Quibbler, it would still look boring without some visual interest. The artists provide this!

Team size: 2
Openings: 0

Duties
  • Creating ads to fill ad spaces
  • Providing images to spice up articles

Qualifications/Skills
  • Your chosen medium isn't all that important, but some skill in providing a good quality digital image is needed (so you can draw things on paper, but the end result needs to be digital)
  • Very creative
  • Strong artistic skills
  • Either drawing skills or graphic design skills (or both, of course)

When applying for this position, please include a sample ad for a wizarding product or service in your application!

Layout editor
When everyone else has provided their content, it still needs to be put together to really form the Quibbler. That's what the Layout editor does.

Team size: 1
Openings: 0

Duties
  • Collecting the provided content and making it into a publishable Quibbler

Qualifications/Skills
  • Graphic design skills
  • Skilful in use of a program suited for creating a multi-page magazine (the current Quibbler layout is done in the Mac program Pages, but you're of course allowed to create a new layout in your preferred program)
  • This usually needs to be done in a relatively tight deadline, so you need to be able to handle the pressure

Event Team
The Event team has an incredibly important task, namely the organising and running of PFF's various events. There are already quite a few recurring events, but new ideas are always welcome of course! Events take a lot of time and effort to organise and I'd like to try always having an event of some kind going, even if it's just a low-effort gnome tossing tournament or the build-up to a holiday like Halloween. It would be brilliant if all members have the ability to create and edit graphics for running event games, but thinkers and writers are needed as well.
Please, don't apply for this if you aren't sure you can put the necessary time and effort in it! The events are a huge, important part of the forum and really take time. It isn't all sitting around chatting about things that would be fun to do; you really have to put work in it and actually running the events takes a lot of work as well!
Temporarily applying for this team is also a possibility, to for instance help with organising one event. A calendar of all events should be published at the start of each year so people have some idea of what's coming.

Team size: 5
Openings: 0

Duties
  • Organising in detail events for the PFF userbase
  • Running said events

Qualifications/Skills
  • Very creative, since you'll need to come up with games and events
  • Ability (or willingness to learn) to create and/or edit graphics
  • Organised, good at planning
  • Experience in running forum games is useful, but not necessary

VIP Team
This team is responsible for running and providing content for the VIP section. VIPs get certain perks of course, but I feel that alone is not worth the money, so I want a team constantly thinking about things to do for the VIPs. Make it something you'd pay for, yourself!

This team is moderator-only, so if you're applying for this, you'd also have to apply for the position of Professor or Prefect.

Team size: 2
Openings: 1

Duties
  • Distributing the VIP monthly PFF-point allowance
  • Thinking of and executing ideas for the VIP members
  • Keeping an eye on the VIP payments and removing members from the group if needed (this is done together with Rhynn and/or Jag17)
  • Assisting VIP members if they have questions about anything VIP

Qualifications/Skills
  • Creativity, to keep thinking of things for the VIP members
  • Experience in running forum games would be good

PR/Social Media Team
This team's responsibility is to put PFF out there. Our relations with other websites of course, but also keeping the social media accounts running and creating new ones where needed/wanted. Naturally, a good knowledge of social media is necessary (or the willingness to learn all there is to know about them). You also shouldn't be afraid to approach other people (websites) about PFF and get us known to them in a positive manner.
I'd like to have our social media putting out a pretty steady stream of content.
Also, this team really needs to work together closely with all the other teams, since they should all be able to provide content to share and work with for this team. So definitely don't be afraid of approaching the other teams and prodding them for info!

Team size: 3
Openings: 2

Duties
  • Keeping PFF's accounts on various Social Media websites running and active and setting up new ones if needed
  • Interacting with other websites to build relations
  • Pulling in new members in other ways you can think of

Qualifications/Skills
  • Good knowledge of using at least one major social media platform
  • Diplomacy
  • Shouldn't be afraid of approaching people and websites

Note, applications don't really have a closing date. They're open as long as there's no '0' next to the Openings for the team you're looking to join!
