"Aye. Ev'rething's fine. Now shush. I'm tryin ta study." Angus said without taking his eyes off the mug. A few seconds later it caught on fire suddenly in a brilliant flash of green fire.
"Ach, for the love of..." he muttered dismayed as he poured water from the water bottle over the magical fire to douse it. As soon as the water touched the flames it extinguished with a loud BANG and the silence smelled of fresh rain on grass.

Angus sat back and looked at the others. "Sorry for that. I'm trying to do homework for Intuitive magic: taking a homework assignment from another class -Transfiguration- and try to solve it intuitively. Again, sorry for the noise."

He took a sip from his tea. "I'm glad the cup is still intact. This was what was supposed to happen..."

He took out his wand and performed a rather complicated transfiguration charm, disintegrating the cup completely. He looked at the dust and tried to get it back into the cup via the same charm, but nothing happened.

"No. That was not supposed to happen." he said rather disappointedly. "I'll go get another mug." and he got up from his chair. Annoyed.

When he returned with another coffe mug, he set it down on the table. But before he started staring at it again, he asked the two guests: "Do you have any tips on improving wand work? I'm in desperate need of improvement."

As soon as the water touched the flames it extinguished with a loud BANG and the silence smelled of fresh rain on grass.

"Ay!" Gwen winced at the sound, reaching up to rub her discomforted ear. She wanted to remind him that they'd chosen to study in Hufflepuff because it was going to be quieter than if they'd gone to study in Ravenclaw tower. But she also realized that the explosion had probably been unintentional. So what had gone wrong?

"Sorry for that. I'm trying to do homework for Intuitive magic: taking a homework assignment from another class -Transfiguration- and try to solve it intuitively. Again, sorry for the noise."

Gwen glanced at the cup. The quandary sounded interesting, though she wasn't sure she understood the concept. "Is there a difference between intuitive magic and wandless magic?"

When he returned with another coffee mug, he set it down on the table. But before he started staring at it again, he asked the two guests: "Do you have any tips on improving wand work? I'm in desperate need of improvement."

"I don't have any ideas, no," Gwen replied. "But... is it possible that your wand movements aren't the problem? Since the intuitive magic isn't using a wand and it's working almost as badly as the transfiguration with a wand, doesn't that suggest that there might be another problem?"

Tiva nodded and tried to return to her studies quietly but the sudden flash and heat from the wash of green flame as it engulfed the poor mug squashed that. She jerked back as the miniature fire protested its watery fate with a bang. The slight fragrance of rain was surprising but quite pleasant.

"Sorry for that. I'm trying to do homework for Intuitive magic: taking a homework assignment from another class -Transfiguration- and try to solve it intuitively. Again, sorry for the noise."

"That's okay," Tiva assured Angus forcing herself not to brush as she offered him a reassuring smile, or at least her attempt at one, before reopening her textbook that she didn't remember closing during the small fire scare.

"I'm glad the cup is still intact. This was what was supposed to happen..."

She looked up ready to see a small creature whether magical or not, however her expectations of seeing a miniature peacock were dashed when the mug transformed into ashes. A part of her wondered briefly if it was suppose to be a phoenix caught in its 'down' phase but when Angus muttered:

"No. That was not supposed to happen. I'll go get another mug."

she knew it was just ashes from a failed transfiguration. Poor Angus.

"Is there a difference between intuitive magic and wandless magic?"

Tiva turned to her friend and nodded yes. She had had the very same question when she signed up for Elemental and Intuitive Magic at the end of last year. She had been too intimidated to ask Professor Magnus while sitting with her to plan her Third Year schedule and had instead asked Thalle. His response had been simple: intuitive magic can use wands, rings, and any other magic focusing conduit or not. Bringing magic back to its roots. Just the sorcerer and magic.

"Intuitive can be used with either wands or without, and, I think, it mainly focuses on using your magical and natural instincts together. Maybe?" she paused before shaking her head, "Thalle excels in that class but I... don't, so you might want to ask him, or Angus. Angus should know."

Tiva had, while speaking to Gwen, cast Finite Incantatem over the ashen remains, frowning at the broken shards before uttering Calicem Reparo just as Angus rejoin them and asked his question.

"Practice and more practice," she paused before adding, "and a surplus of practice dummies."

"I don't have any ideas, no, But... is it possible that your wand movements aren't the problem? Since the intuitive magic isn't using a wand and it's working almost as badly as the transfiguration with a wand, doesn't that suggest that there might be another problem?"

Tiva nodded her head in agreement with her friend's words. Offering the original cup back to Angus she asked, "Do you picture or imagine the final transformation or what you want to do before using your wand?" she paused remembering his wand movements, "Also, do you practice wand patterns and movements without the incarnation before trying the spell? That's what I do. Uses muscle memory and it seems to help me."

Tiva had, while speaking to Gwen, cast Finite Incantatem over the ashen remains, frowning at the broken shards before uttering Calicem Reparo just as Angus rejoin them and asked his question.

"Do you have any tips on improving wand work? I'm in desperate need of improvement."

"Practice and more practice," Tiva paused before adding, "and a surplus of practice dummies."

Gwen said: "I don't have any ideas, no, But... is it possible that your wand movements aren't the problem? Since the intuitive magic isn't using a wand and it's working almost as badly as the transfiguration with a wand, doesn't that suggest that there might be another problem?"

That's what I do. Uses muscle memory and it seems to help me."

Angus accepted it and looked whistfully at the repaired mug. These girls had just undone his failed transfiguration in the time it took him to get a new mug. He suppressed a rising anger and resentment. Gwen's words had stung. He turned to the American girl and said, trying to keep the anger from his voice, but sounding a bit more threatening than he intended: "Are yu saying I'm rubbish at magic?"

Then he calmed himself down and apologised. "Sorry. I didn't mean to sound angry." He looked at his wand. "I don't know what the problem is. Whenever I have to use a wand, it becomes so much harder. I practise the movements every day, I picture the result until my head hurts..." his voice started to rise again "and still I cannay turn a mug into a feather!" the last bit was addressed directly to the mug, which promptly turned into a feather, seemingly out of fear for repercussions of the livid Hufflepuff.

It was quite a pretty feather, dark blue with iridescent lines of blues and greens, reminiscent of an exotic night bird.

Angus looked perplexed. Then his face fell again. "And then this happens! How am I going to learn if I don't know what I'm doing?" he asked at the ceiling, shaking his fist at it. He sighed and looked at his guests. "Sorry to bother yu with all of this." he started and then hesitantly said: "How would yu turn this mug into a feather? Can ye show me, please? Maybe I kin learn from yu two." His Scottish accent had become more pornounced.

He turned to the American girl and said, trying to keep the anger from his voice, but sounding a bit more threatening than he intended: "Are yu saying I'm rubbish at magic?"

Gwen flinched at his tone. "Of course I'm not saying you're rubbish at magic! I'm only a third year, what do I know, anyway?"

Then he calmed himself down and apologised. "Sorry. I didn't mean to sound angry."

Gwen sighed. "I saw some of those spells you casted yesterday. Of course you're not rubbish at magic."

"I don't know what the problem is. Whenever I have to use a wand, it becomes so much harder. I practise the movements every day, I picture the result until my head hurts..."

Gwen considered this information. "Does everything become harder when you use your wand? Or just transfiguration?"

It was quite a pretty feather, dark blue with iridescent lines of blues and greens, reminiscent of an exotic night bird.

"Um..." Gwen considered the wisdom of asking her question and decided that she might as well ask it. "What kind of feather have you been picturing?"

"Sorry to bother yu with all of this." he started and then hesitantly said: "How would yu turn this mug into a feather? Can ye show me, please? Maybe I kin learn from yu two." His Scottish accent had become more pronounced.

Gwen considered his question. She wasn't sure what spell he was using to start with. It reminded her of a quill creating spell she'd heard of called Scribblifors, but she was uncertain that it was the same spell. "What transformation spell did you start with?"

Angus turned red, realizing he had been rather rude to his friends and scowled at himself mentally.

Gwen asked: "Does everything become harder when you use your wand? Or just transfiguration?"

"Anything that requires a wand tends to take a lot of work for me. It is a miracle I've made it this far into the school curriculum without being sent home for reasons of 'too little magical talent'. Transfiguration, charms, even Defense against the dark arts. Although, come to think of it, that is a more reactionary way of magic."

"Um..." Gwen considered the wisdom of asking her question and decided that she might as well ask it. "What kind of feather have you been picturing?"

Angus thought on this for a moment. "I haven't been picturing a feather very strongly. Just a white one, if any. Certainly not an exotic one like this. I have no idea where tha' came from." He gestured at the feather on the table. "I dinnay think I've ever seen one like it."

Gwen considered his question. She wasn't sure what spell he was using to start with. It reminded her of a quill creating spell she'd heard of called Scribblifors, but she was uncertain that it was the same spell. "What transformation spell did you start with?"

"Ah. Just a transfiguration charm that has a very diverse use. It is called Diversifors and can be used in general if you do not know the specific transfiguration spell for the starting and finishing items. I guess it is harder to use because of that, but I dinnay know the proper mug-to-feather charm to begin with. Du yu have any idea?"

He suppressed a rising anger and resentment. Gwen's words had stung. He turned to the American girl and said, trying to keep the anger from his voice, but sounding a bit more threatening than he intended: "Are yu saying I'm rubbish at magic?"

Tiva drew back at Angus's tone. The underlying threat in his voice surprised and frightened her. She had heard of his rash temper but she hadn't thought they had done anything to ignite it.

Gwen flinched at his tone. "Of course I'm not saying you're rubbish at magic! I'm only a third year, what do I know, anyway?"

Tiva quickly nodded her agreement to her friend's statement. "We only were trying to help. No offense." she paused, unsure what to say next. Thankfully she was saved from scrambling for something more to say by Angus's apology.

Gwen sighed. "I saw some of those spells you casted yesterday. Of course you're not rubbish at magic."

"Yeah, you are anything but rubbish at magic. It isn't easy battling--" she stopped when she remembered Priscilla was nearby. Boy, keeping secrets were hard. "-- charmed defense dummies..." she trailed off wishing she hadn't spoken.

"I don't know what the problem is. Whenever I have to use a wand, it becomes so much harder. I practise the movements every day, I picture the result until my head hurts..."

Gwen considered this information. "Does everything become harder when you use your wand? Or just transfiguration?"

Transfiguration, charms, even Defense against the dark arts. Although, come to think of it, that is a more reactionary way of magic."

Tiva frowned. "Maybe your wand is fighting you. Have you looked into wandlore or wand care?" she asked softly hoping not to stroke his ire again.

She blinked when the next words from Angus were followed by the mug spontaneously turning into an exotic feather. Tentatively she picked it up and examined it while Angus and Gwen talked. It was a beautiful feather. The iridescent blues complimented the greens and emphasized its shape and impressive length favorably.

"Maybe you should fashion one," she suggested softly, almost as if she was talking to herself, as she gently ran her finger across the feather. "A wand and its maker usually have a good bond to begin with, so it might be easier to build a strong wizard-wand bond with it. And you won't have to worry about conflicts from previous magical signals interfering with your own."

She had heard of Diversifors, Thalle used it frequently, but she didn't know the proper mug-to-feather spell. A few possible charms came to mind, but sadly no transfiguration spells magically came to her. "Besides knowing that pinna is Latin for feather and the odd charm that can have a mug grew feathers or turn your mug into a nesting spot for feather quills, I don't. Sorry."

"Unless..." she whispered as she absentmindedly tucked Angus's feather into her hair behind her right ear. Picking up her now empty mug she cast a quick cleansing charm before tapping her wand on its brim and uttered, "Pinnatransifors" in a soft whisper.

The cup quivered in Tiva's hand before it morphed into a small luminescent blue song bird. Well, that's clearly not the right spell. Before she could Finite the cup back into its original being the bird chirped and hopped onto Tiva's head. Then Tiva blinked as the bird looked down at her questionably. This had never happened in class. Or out of it for that matter.

Just as Tiva was about to grab the bird it trilled a small melody and took off. Flying around the cozy common room in a lazy figure eight pattern as Tiva tried to capture it. A failed pursuit for just as she was about to utter the charm that world cover the bird in a fine net the door to the common room opened.

"No! Shut that door!" Tiva commanded a second to late as the luminescent bird fly over Antony Blakemore, who had chuckled and leaned backwards and turned to see the bird soar by him and into the corridor. "Great."

Turning to her friends she offered an apology, "Sorry. I'll just be a minute. Continue studying." before running up the stairs and out of the common room after her mug.

As Tiva vanished through the Common Room door, Angus thought on her comment about wand care.

Maybe my wand *is* fighting me. Or I'm fighting my wand. I should definitely have to look into wands and their proper care.

He had never thought of his wand as something with a will of its own. Maybe that had been his problem all along.

I should have known. Everything is different in this school... in this world! he thought, annoyed at his own inexperience with the secret world of witches and wizards.

As it took Tiva a while to get back, he realized she didn't know the secret nock and could very well be doused in vinegar at this very moment. He got up and walked to the entrance of the Hufflepuff Common Room. "I'm going to see if Tiva is having problems getting back in." he said to Gwen. "Getting the code wrong has dire consequences."

As he opened the door, he looked for the third year Ravenclaw...

"Scribbliflors is a spell for creating quills," Gwen threw in. But she wasn't sure if that had any relevance. She watched as Tiva's attempted spell turned into a luminescent blue song bird rather than a feather and then as Tiva left and Angus went to see if she needed help getting back in. Gwen blinked. Now what was she supposed to do? She knew that she ought to return to her own neglected homework, but she also didn't want to be left all alone in the Hufflepuff common room with people she didn't know. Gathering her things into her bag, she hurried after Angus and Tiva, hoping that she wouldn't be so unfortunate as to get lost.

Tiva retraced her steps back to the barreled entrance of the Hufflepuff Common Rooms absently. Replaying the odd meeting she just had with Julian as she petted the small blue bird still clinging to her shirt. She had just made a new friend and had kept a transfigured bird from escaping and causing unknown damage to itself and the environment. As it tilted its head and blinked its black eyes with every other step she took she wondered if she could keep it. A thought immediately dashed as she remembered Slingshot, her cat. Sighing she knew she would do the right thing and transfigure the glowing blue bird back to its inert form once she made it back into Hufflepuff Commons.

Stopping as she heard the barrel opening and footsteps approaching. Quickly smiling when she saw it was Angus and Gwen.

"Hey," she meekly waved joining them, "found it." she held up the bird that had caused this mini-adventure. "Well, actually I had helped. Julian caught it for me."
