Hermione, the idea behind pendulum was to show that the Earth was rotating.
Once the pendulum is let to swing, it seems to change its path during the day, but actually it is the floor beneath it that changes (because it's being twisted around by the daily rotation of Earth). The experiment is set so that there are no forces which would make pendulum rotate around it's own plane.
So, if the pendulum seems to rotate with respect to the floor then it must be the floor that is rotating (and since the floor is attached to the earth, it must be earth that is moving). The amount of 'twisting' motion of the floor varies with the latitude (for instance, on the poles the twisting would be maximal, then going towards the equator it would drop, at the equator, it's barely noticeable which is why the experiment can't be done properly around equator).
The Google animation shows that apparent 'twisting' and you can see patterns the pendulum makes at the different latitudes (latitude can be controlled by the little earth icon in lower right part).
There are a lot of museums which have pendulum to show the Earth's rotation, there is really cool set up in one of our museums where pendulum is set up above sand and you can see how it's trajectory changes because it's drawing patterns in the sand.

Hope this help a bit :)
